According to international conventions on the carriage of goods, the liability of the freight forwarder and/or carrier is limited. This means that in the event of loss or damage to the goods, the carrier’s standard liability does not cover the full value of the goods, but only the compensation amount defined by law.
We recommend insuring valuable goods for their full value.
Liability limits by mode of transport:
Road transport: 8.33 SDR/kg
Example (road transport – CMR):
Let’s assume a 25 kg box containing professional photography equipment worth €12,000 is being transported.
According to the CMR Convention, the carrier’s liability is 8.33 SDR per kilogram.
Calculation:
25 kg × 8.33 SDR = 208.25 SDR
(208.25 SDR ≈ €265, depending on the exchange rate)
👉 Result: If the entire shipment is lost or damaged, the carrier will only compensate about €265, although the actual value is €12,000.
Conclusion: Standard liability does not cover the full value of the goods – therefore, it is important to consider additional cargo insurance.
